TALES OF THE CITY
Inspired by the Armistead Maupin novel series of the same name, this EP is another sister to 'Choreography', updating one song from the record, and presenting two more that tie together to look at a person, a place, and what that combination does.
'Into The Night' is a song about throwing caution to the wind: meeting someone who catches you completely off guard and letting yourself run away with them in the moment without looking back. It's inspired by the Michelle Pfeiffer and Jeff Goldblum movie of the same name, and celebrates living life with a little more risk, in the moment. I wrote it with Ian Masterson and it's one of my favourites I've written with him.
'New York Pretty' came out of the blue one sunny say in New York winter. It's inspired by the Bette Midler and Lily Tomlin movie 'Big Business' and the idea of spending a long time in a place that's not quite right, eventually moving to the city and feeling like you finally belong. It's no secret that New York is my place for that, and also inspired by RuPaul and the incredible RuPaul's Drag Race, I wanted to write a song about self-empowerment and self-belief, and this is what emerged. Musically, it's a mix of inspiration from Broadway, Queer As Folk's UK gay scene and Kylie's 'Light Years' which all had a large influence on my music taste growing up.
'Thinking About It' started with the piano chords on a rainy autumn day and ended up as a nod to the 80s nostalgia that I love so much in the production. I thought it would be a nice accompaniment to the two upbeat and head-forward other tracks on the EP, showing a calm after the storm of energy.
I hope you like the EP and I hope to see you all on the road again soon. Thanks to everyone who's made NYC feel so much like home, and to those who make each city I visit so special and fun when we get to tour! <3
